Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Description

Large, powerful, and striking tricolor working dog with distinctive tri-colored coat and gentle, dependable temperament. Known for strength and robust build as a draft dog.

History

One of Switzerland's oldest breeds, likely descended from Roman Mastiffs, used as an all-purpose draft, herding, and farm guardian dog in the Swiss Alps. Nearly extinct until rediscovered and revived in early 1900s by Dr. Albert Heim.
