Developed in 19th century Australia from imported British working dogs including smooth collies and other herding breeds, possibly with German herding dog influence. Bred for endurance, versatility and stamina to work livestock in harsh Australian landscape. Not recognized by major kennel clubs but has established breed standards by Koolie breed societies.
