About

Sakhalin Husky

Description

Large, powerful spitz-type sled dog originating from Sakhalin Island, also known as the Karafuto Ken. This robust arctic breed with dense double coat was originally bred for endurance and strength in cold climates but is now considered functionally extinct with no active breeding programs.

History

Developed by the indigenous Nivkh people of Sakhalin Island for sledding, hunting and transportation. Gained international fame after the 1958 Japanese Antarctic expedition where dogs Taro and Jiro survived a year abandoned in Antarctica. Despite revival efforts, the breed is considered functionally extinct since the last confirmed purebred died in the 1970s.
