Description

Small, compact, agile terrier with a smooth, short coat and alert expression. Strong, active, and athletic, slightly longer than high, this breed was developed for farm work and vermin control with an alert and friendly disposition.

History

Developed in Australia from small terriers and miniature Fox Terriers brought by British settlers in the 19th century to the Tenterfield region of New South Wales. Bred as versatile vermin hunters and companions for farm work and ratting, developing as a distinct breed through the 19th and 20th centuries. The breed name references the town of Tenterfield, NSW, where they were prevalent, and was officially adopted in the late 20th century. Recognized by the Australian National Kennel Council.
